Let's talk about Obama

First of all, yeahhhh! I'm super excited and had to keep reminding myself last night of the amazing history we all just witnessed and will continue to witness in the years to come.

More related to class, I'm interested in who Obama is going to pick as his Secretary of Education. This article in the Chronicle of Higher Education throws around a lot of names. Something I thought was interesting is that most former Secretary's of Education have had experience mostly at the elementary and secondary levels with only one with higher ed experience.

I must say I don't know much about any of these people. Who would you pick and why?

I'd look for Jim Hunt or Arne Duncan --both are exceptionally knowledgeable would be bale to manage and the various constituencies that need to play well together--the unions, the social entrepreneurs and the wonks in the next administration.
Duncan is a Chicago/basketball buddy of Obama and would signal the the pres is looking inside his circle for leadership--Hunt is the most knowledgeable ex governor on education matters hands down

I heard Linda Darling-Hammond from Stanford was also in the group that is consulting with him. Here's a quote from one of her books---The Right to Learn---
"Bureaucratic solutions to problems of practice will always fail because effective teaching is not routine, students are not passive, and questions of practice are not simple, predictable, or standardized. Consequently, instructional decisions cannot be formulated on high then packaged and handed down to teachers."

What do you think his pick of Rahm Emanuel as Chief of Staff says? According to the NY Times, he's one of his close friends. Do you think this trend will follow with other picks? I'm also curious what Linda Darling-Hammond would bring to the cabinet seeing her thoughts on bureaucratic processes.
